WAFRIC Awards 2026 Nominee Spotlight | Actor of the Year | Guinea-Bissau
Cinema can cross borders without losing its connection to the places, cultures and experiences that shape an artist. For Welket Bungué, acting is part of a wider creative practice that spans performance, filmmaking and writing, connecting his roots in Guinea-Bissau with film industries and audiences across the world.
Born on 7 February 1988 in Xitole, Guinea-Bissau, Bungué is a Portuguese-Guinean artist of Balanta heritage. His professional journey reflects a combination of formal training, international collaboration and an interest in how people and communities are represented through cinema.
At the West African Citizens Awards 2026, he is nominated for Actor of the Year, representing Guinea-Bissau.

From Guinea-Bissau to professional theatre training
Bungué’s artistic development includes formal theatre education at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School, known in Portuguese as Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (ESTC), where he trained in acting. He later completed postgraduate studies in performance at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) in Brazil.
This educational journey across different cultural environments helped establish a foundation for work that moves between acting, performance and independent filmmaking. Rather than limiting his practice to one discipline, Bungué has developed a career that also encompasses writing, directing and producing.
His background is significant to understanding the breadth of his work: he is not only an actor interpreting scripts written by others, but also a filmmaker interested in developing and shaping stories himself.
A growing presence in international cinema
One of Bungué’s most prominent screen performances came in Burhan Qurbani’s 2020 film Berlin Alexanderplatz, a contemporary adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s influential novel. Bungué played Francis, a central character in the film’s exploration of migration, belonging, survival and life in Berlin.
The performance brought him wider international recognition. He received a nomination for Best Leading Actor at the German Film Awards, commonly known as the Lola Awards, and was nominated for the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin International Film Festival. He also received the Best Actor distinction at the Stockholm International Film Festival for the role.
These recognitions marked an important point in his career, placing his work within the conversation around European and international cinema.
Bungué subsequently appeared in David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future (2022), a science-fiction body-horror film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. He appeared as Detective Cope, sharing the screen with an international cast that included Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart.
His film credits also include Body Electric (Corpo Elétrico), directed by Marcelo Caetano; Joaquim, directed by Marcelo Gomes; and Letters from War (Cartas da Guerra), directed by Ivo M. Ferreira. These projects demonstrate the range of productions in which he has participated, from intimate character-driven stories to historical drama and genre cinema.
Beyond acting: a filmmaker and writer
Bungué’s creative work extends beyond his performances on screen. He has directed short films, including Bastien (2016), Arriaga (2019) and I Am Not Pilatus (2019). His production work has also included short films screened at international festivals, contributing to a practice that brings him into contact with filmmaking from both sides of the camera.
In 2022, he released Corpo Periférico, an autobiographical essay on auteur filmmaking and what he describes through the concept of self-representation cinema. The publication offers another perspective on his work: an artist thinking critically about the stories cinema tells, who gets to tell them and how people can participate in representing their own experiences.
Bungué is also a co-founder of KUSSA, a production company connected to his broader creative practice. His professional affiliations include membership in the Portuguese Film Academy since 2015 and the Deutsche Filmakademie since 2020, as well as associate membership of the European Film Academy since 2021.
These roles place him within professional networks that engage with cinema in Portugal, Germany and the wider European film community.
A career shaped by cultural movement and representation
Bungué’s work crosses linguistic, geographical and cultural boundaries. Born in Guinea-Bissau, trained in Portugal and Brazil, and based in Berlin, he has built a career through international collaborations without his country of birth becoming merely a footnote in his biography.
His Balanta heritage is also part of the context through which his identity as an artist is understood. In a film landscape where African stories and perspectives continue to seek wider visibility, artists working across borders can contribute to more complex representations of African identities and experiences.
That contribution should not be reduced to nationality alone. Bungué’s career is also defined by his craft, his work across different creative disciplines and his participation in productions that reach audiences beyond a single national industry.
