WAFRIC Awards 2026 Nominee Spotlight | Lifestyle Creator of the Year | Guinea-Bissau

A creative life can be expressed through more than one medium. For Sidney Cerqueira, creativity brings together visual expression, African identity, cultural storytelling and a commitment to social responsibility. A Guinean artist whose work has travelled across international exhibition spaces, he has built a creative journey that connects personal expression with wider conversations about society and the human experience.

Now nominated for Lifestyle Creator of the Year at the West African Citizens Awards (WAFRIC Awards) 2026, Sidney represents a creative perspective rooted in culture, artistic exploration and the power of ideas to reach people beyond geographical borders.

A Guinean Creative with an International Journey

Sidney Castro Fernandes Cerqueira was born in Lisbon, Portugal, to Guinean parents and grew up in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, before moving to Portugal as a young adult. His connection to Guinea-Bissau remains central to his artistic identity, influencing the colours, movement and cultural references that characterise his work.

According to a 2024 profile by BANTUMEN, Sidney began pursuing visual art professionally in 2004. Although he initially studied Portuguese language and culture at the University of Lisbon, he ultimately chose to devote himself to painting.

His artistic language is distinguished by vivid colours, expressive forms and a style he describes as Realismo Espontâneo. Drawing inspiration from Guinea-Bissau, the African continent and the rhythms of dance, his paintings communicate through visual energy as well as subject matter.

His work has been exhibited in several countries, including Portugal, Senegal, Brazil, Luxembourg and Cabo Verde. His exhibition history includes participation in Dakar’s Dak’Art contemporary African art biennale, as well as exhibitions in cultural institutions and galleries beyond the African continent. These experiences have helped bring his artistic perspective to audiences across different cultural settings.

Beyond Aesthetics: Creativity with a Social Conscience

One of the defining features of Sidney’s creative journey is his interest in social issues. His paintings have addressed subjects including domestic violence, child abuse, inequality and the circumstances of disadvantaged children.

For Sidney, art can do more than decorate a space. It can communicate difficult realities, challenge perceptions and encourage people to consider the society they want to build.

This conviction is reflected in Cores da Esperança — Colours of Hope — a social initiative that uses artistic expression to engage children and support vulnerable communities.

Through the project, Sidney organises painting workshops where children can express themselves creatively. Their work is then presented alongside his, with the artworks exchanged for educational materials or essential goods intended for institutions supporting disadvantaged children.

The initiative has reached communities in Guinea-Bissau, Cabo Verde, Senegal, Portugal, Brazil and São Tomé and Príncipe. In February 2025, the project returned to Guinea-Bissau through a workshop involving children from villages near Quinhamel, in collaboration with the Portuguese Embassy and the Portuguese Cultural Centre in Bissau.

The initiative demonstrates how a creative platform can extend beyond individual achievement to create opportunities for participation, learning and community engagement.

Telling African Stories Across Borders

Sidney’s creative work also challenges narrow perceptions of Guinea-Bissau and African identity. Through his paintings, he brings attention to the country’s cultural richness, artistic expression and social realities.

His international exhibitions provide opportunities for audiences to encounter a perspective shaped by Guinean heritage and broader African experiences. Rather than treating culture as something separate from contemporary life, his work brings cultural identity into conversations about dignity, human rights, social responsibility and collective progress.

In 2026, his exhibition Liberdades, presented in Praia, Cabo Verde, explored themes of freedom, expression, human rights and collective struggles for dignity and justice. The exhibition further illustrates his interest in using art to engage with questions that extend beyond the canvas.

For audiences discovering Sidney through digital platforms, this wider creative journey offers a reminder that lifestyle and creative expression can encompass cultural interests, personal values, artistic practice and engagement with the world around us.
