WAFRIC Awards 2026 Nominee Spotlight | Event Host (MC) of the Year | Ghana 🇬🇭

A memorable event is rarely the result of decorations, music and a carefully planned programme alone. Behind the smooth flow of a celebration is often a master of ceremonies who understands timing, anticipates challenges, connects with guests and ensures that every part of the occasion works together.

For Ghanaian professional MC Eddy Acquah, popularly known as “Happy Guy,” event hosting is a craft that extends far beyond speaking into a microphone. It involves preparation, coordination, communication and the responsibility of helping people experience their special moments without losing the rhythm of the occasion.

With a professional journey built around weddings and celebrations, Eddy has developed a profile in Ghana’s event-hosting industry. His nomination for Event Host (MC) of the Year at the WAFRIC Awards 2026 recognises his work in a profession that helps transform planned gatherings into memorable experiences.

Building a Career Around the Art of Hosting

Eddy’s professional journey was explored in a June 2026 episode of the Blacvolta Podcast, titled 800 Weddings Later: How Eddy Acquah Became Ghana’s Top MC and Realtor.

According to the episode description, his journey began when he hosted his father’s 60th birthday celebration, despite having no prior professional experience. What started as a personal occasion eventually developed into a professional pursuit.

The podcast describes a career spanning hundreds of events, including occasions at prominent Accra hospitality venues such as Kempinski, Marriott and Mövenpick.

His story illustrates how a skill first tested in a familiar setting can become a professional service through experience, consistency and a willingness to learn. Event hosting requires more than an outgoing personality: it calls for an understanding of people, the ability to read a room and the discipline to prepare for occasions where many moving parts must come together.

For Eddy, the microphone became the starting point for building a recognisable professional identity around celebrations and live events.

The Work Behind a Seamless Wedding

In June 2023, Kele+ featured Eddy in an article examining the importance of hiring a professional MC for a Ghanaian wedding.

At the time of that interview, Eddy said he had been working professionally as an MC for approximately four and a half years and had hosted nearly 350 events, with weddings accounting for an estimated 70 to 75 per cent of them. These figures reflect his experience as reported in 2023 and should not be mistaken for current totals.

The interview offered an insight into how he understood the responsibilities of his role. A wedding MC must keep track of the programme, prepare for upcoming activities and coordinate with other people involved in delivering the celebration.

For example, the transition from cutting the cake to the couple’s first dance may require advance communication with the DJ and other event personnel. If a programme changes unexpectedly, the MC may need to adjust the sequence while keeping guests informed and the atmosphere positive.

Much of this work happens away from the audience’s attention. Guests may see the host introducing speakers, making announcements and entertaining the room, but the professional responsibility also includes anticipating what comes next and helping different elements of the occasion work together.

Eddy’s comments in the interview highlighted this often-overlooked side of the profession.

More Than Entertainment: Coordination and Communication

The master of ceremonies occupies a distinctive position at an event. The role combines public speaking with practical coordination, requiring the host to remain aware of the schedule, the audience and the people responsible for each segment.

A wedding, for instance, may bring together two families, friends, cultural traditions and a sequence of carefully planned activities. The MC helps guide guests through those moments while respecting the significance of the occasion.

Eddy’s approach, as described in the Kele+ interview, reflects an understanding that the host is not simply there to entertain. Professionalism also means being prepared, knowing the programme and helping prevent avoidable disruptions.

This responsibility becomes particularly important when an event involves multiple vendors and a detailed schedule. Clear communication can help ensure that the next activity is ready before the current one ends, allowing the celebration to maintain its momentum.

The ability to combine entertainment with practical awareness is an important part of what distinguishes event hosting as a profession.

Growing Beyond the Microphone

Eddy’s professional interests also extend into real estate. He is associated with Eddy Acquah Properties, where he has built a parallel career in property and consultancy.

In September 2025, MyJoyOnline reported that Edward Acquah, CEO of Eddy Acquah Properties, received the Most Outstanding Personality in Consultancy award at the Forty Under 40 Awards. The report focused on his real-estate business and consultancy work.

A June 2026 podcast episode also explored how he navigates the two careers, discussing the business decisions involved in building a personal brand, negotiating fees, maintaining relevance and developing a sustainable enterprise.

Although event hosting and real estate serve different markets, both involve communication, managing expectations and building professional relationships. His work across the two sectors offers a broader view of his entrepreneurial journey beyond live entertainment.

For this spotlight, however, his nomination recognises his work as an event host and the contribution he makes to Ghana’s events industry.
