WAFRIC Awards 2026 Nominee Spotlight | Music Artist of the Year | Guinea-Bissau

Music can entertain, challenge perspectives and give a voice to the experiences of a people. For Guinean rapper Pensador Jurilírico, hip-hop provides a space to explore identity, social realities and the future of his country through lyrics shaped by cultural pride and reflection.

Born Satenem Djaló on 12 May 1998 in the Gabú region of Guinea-Bissau, Pensador Jurilírico—also known as Pensador Jr—began his musical journey in 2013 as a member of the group Astros de Hip Hop. His career gained greater momentum in 2019, marking the beginning of a journey that would establish him as a recognised voice in Guinea-Bissau’s contemporary hip-hop scene.

A Voice Rooted in Guinean Identity

Pensador’s music connects modern hip-hop with the lived experiences, cultural identity and aspirations of Guinea-Bissau. His work reflects an interest in more than individual expression: it engages with the social, economic and political circumstances shaping the country and its people.

In March 2024, BANTUMEN featured his single “Mundo Na Kunsinu”, a title meaning “The World Will Know Us” in Guinean Creole. The song calls for unity among Guineans and encourages reflection on the country’s social and economic challenges, while expressing the ambition to introduce Guinea-Bissau’s cultural richness to a wider international audience.

The track became the title song of his first full-length album, Mundo Na Kunsinu. The project brought together a collection of songs exploring Guinean life, customs and cultural expression, with fellow musician Diditi featured on the title track.

For Pensador, music offers a way to bring the experiences of his country into wider conversations while affirming the value of Guinean identity.

From Gabú to a Wider National Audience

Pensador’s journey also reflects the importance of artists emerging from outside capital cities. Originally from Gabú in eastern Guinea-Bissau, he has spoken about his ambition to expand the reach of his music beyond the capital and connect with audiences across the country and in the diaspora.

His live performance milestones have helped advance that ambition. On 27 April 2024, he presented Mundo Na Kunsinu at the Lino Correia Stadium in Bissau. According to BANTUMEN, the concert attracted a large audience and represented a significant moment in his career as he brought his debut album to the stage.

His performances combine hip-hop with imagery drawn from Guinean culture, including references to Fula heritage. This relationship between contemporary music and cultural identity gives his artistic expression a distinctly local foundation while allowing it to engage with the wider African hip-hop landscape.

An Evolving Musical Catalogue

Pensador has continued to release music and collaborate with other artists. His catalogue includes “Sinico” featuring MC Pablo, as well as “ARREPENDIMENTO” featuring Projeto Aliança, alongside other singles released across digital music platforms.

His continuing output demonstrates an active recording career and an ongoing engagement with contemporary hip-hop. Through solo releases and collaborations, he continues to develop his musical identity while contributing to a creative scene that connects artists, audiences and cultural movements in Guinea-Bissau.
